Iran - Interpostal Seals

The Iranian Postal Administration issued interpostal seals in the early 1880s for use on official mails between domestic post offices with occasional use on correspondence to foreign countries. The earliest known usage of them is 1885. They were not used for repair (as Egyptian interpostal seals sometimes were) but because they look similar, a few examples are shown here. Most commonly found in mint condition, they are infrequently seen on cover.

They are listed by Mr. Mehrdad Sadri in his 2007 Persiphila Iran Classic Philatelic Reference Volume 1 Qajar Dynasty, First Edition.

Description: Spectacular 1886 registered cover from the postal administration in Teheran to Vienna, Austria, with five circular Teheran Interpostal seals on reverse. The cover has punched holes in the shape of stars underneath each label and there is a lining within the cover to which the labels are affixed.

The officially revalued postage stamps on the front have surcharges that were created in 1885 due to a shortage of stamps for use on mails sent abroad. The "OFFICIEL" (French for "Official") handstamp was applied by postal authorities to emphasize their legitimate nature. They are very scarce on cover.

This item is illustrated on page 195 of the above mentioned work and is shown courtesy of Mehrdad Sadri by permission.
