Sierra Leone

Formerly a British colony, Sierra Leone is located on the west coast of Africa. One official seal design has been recorded, and is seldomly seen. Sierra Leone became an independent republic in 1971.

Description: 1914 cover from Freetown, Sierra Leone to Bern, Switzerland with single official seal of Sierra Leone on backflap. Letter may have been received unsealed at the post office.

Description: July 1917 cover from Freetown, Sierra Leone to London, England closed at right side with same type seal, used as a censor label. It is tied front and reverse by a "PASSED BY CENSOR" handstamp. This seal is most commonly seen used for censorship purposes.
