Description: Registry seal on reverse of large Post Office Department, Stamp & Envelope Agency envelope from New York, with October 31 rimless registry cancel (circa 1875), to Lower Squankum, Monmouth County, NJ. Signed E.W. Barber, Third Assistant P. M. General and D.M. Boyd Agent (Stamp & Envelope Agency).

This is one of a handful of reported examples of registry seal usage on an envelope from the Postage Stamp Agency in New York. When the use of these seals was discontinued in 1875, postmasters had been directed to return all unused stocks to Washington. The green registry seal had been supplied for use only with Morgan or Nesbitt Registered Package Envelopes (as shown on the previous page), and any non-standard usage such as this is rather unusual.

Description: Circa 1880 (3c stamp is a soft paper 1879 issue) cover to Corning, NY apparently opened in error by the wrong recipient, and reclosed at top with single registry seal. Note the similarity of the signature at the left and the addressee. A non-standard, unauthorized usage of this seal. Rare example of use of remaining OXF1 stocks. Either an 1877 "Post Obitum" Dead Letter Office seal or 1879 regular issue seal should have been used instead.
